Dr. Jan Maisel is originally from Michigan. She completed her undergraduate education at the University of Michigan and then moved to California for graduate study in the basic sciences. She received a Ph.D. in Molecular Biology from the University of California, Berkeley, followed by a fellowship in Clinical Genetics at the University of California, San Francisco. Her work with genetics patients led to a desire to pursue the more clinical aspects of medicine, which led to medical school at the University of Miami. She then returned to UCSF for her internship and residency in Pediatrics, where Dr.Stewart Rowe was one of her mentors. After a fellowship in Ambulatory Medicine at UCSF, she joined Tamalpais Pediatrics in 1984.

Over the years Dr. Maisel has been active with the local chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Marin County Nutrition Wellness Consortium, and is also a past chair of the Marin General Hospital Department of Pediatrics. She currently volunteers for several Bay Area nonprofit agencies working in the health and human services arena.

She and her husband live in Tiburon with their labradoodle, and have one college-age son. When not seeing patients or volunteering, she enjoys open-space dog walks, travel (especially scuba diving in tropical waters), cuisine, and Bay Area cultural events.
